Groups are the optimal way for children to work on social skills with peers. Many children respond very differently when learning amongst their peers.

Diane Lewis, MA, CCC-SLP is always willing to arrange for a dyad or triad with the clients already attending sessions at Diane Lewis, MA, CCC-SLP focusing on the following skills:

  • Social skills;
  • Feeding;
  • Drama;
  • Yoga;
  • Gymnastics.

Diane Lewis, MA, CCC-SLP is open to suggestions based on the child’s particular interests.

Social Skills Groups

Socials skills groups and dyads are designed to facilitate the development of social interaction and play skills.  During these fun and engaging sessions, your child will strengthen their skills while experiencing positive and meaningful interactions with their peers.  In order to maximize your child’s enjoyment and participation, the therapy activities will be based on the interests and needs of the children in each group.  Activities might include sports, puppets, role play, board games, and sensory exercises, just to name a few.  The therapist leading the group will form goals for your child based on your priorities as well as formal and informal test results.  The following skills may be targeted during social skills groups and dyads: initiating and maintain interactions with peers, emotions, body language and facial expressions, increasing engagement and shared play, problem solving, compromising, and identifying and repairing communication breakdowns.

Feeding Groups

Feeding groups are designed to help children who struggle with feeding issues, such as limited variety and/or volume of foods and difficulty controlling and/or manipulating food.  Various sensory and oral-motor activities will be incorporated in the sessions in order to organize, strengthen, and prepare your child for a positive feeding experience.  The sessions will include many elements of the Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) approach to feeding, which is a developmental approach that allows the child to interact with the food in a playful, non-stressful way.  We believe in using affect and respecting every child and their specific challenges, so they can let us know when they are ready.

Groups and Dyads with Siblings

Groups and dyads with siblings are designed to help families find ways that they can all play, have fun, and interact together.  Theses sessions are the perfect opportunity to practice play skills, learn effective strategies, and discuss ways to encourage interactions and play between siblings at home.

Groups and Dyads with Friends

We know that it is often difficult to facilitate play dates and help your child feel successful while interacting with peers.  Therefore, we developed these sessions not only to improve your child’s social and play skills, but to help train you on how to foster more positive peer interactions for your child in a variety of settings.  These sessions are designed so your child can engage in play with a friend and feel successful in doing so, while you learn strategies to help promote your child’s skills and enriching experiences at home.
